Our Mission

The ASIJ ES Library is a joyful and lively place and the library team looks forward to another great year of reading, exploring, creating and sharing. Our mission is to foster inquiring minds and wild readers. The library houses over 30,000 elementary level materials, including both print and digital resources. These resources are available to ASIJ students and their families.

The Hub of Activity

There is never a dull moment in the ASIJ Elementary Library. Students are allowed to freely browse the shelves and find something to read that ignites their imaginations and expands their knowledge and information about a particular passion or subject during scheduled library classes or during recesses. The library is always buzzing with activity throughout the day, especially during recess times when students can be found reading, writing, socializing, building, coding, crafting, creating screen casts, playing on the LEGO wall, performing magic tricks, playing cards, chess and sometimes just relaxing in a cozy chair.

Scheduled Library Classes

Our kindergarten through grade 5 students have a scheduled library time during their 9-day rotation. When students come to the library, they learn how to locate books and use the online catalog, how to find good-fit books, how to access and use digital resources, as well as participate in library sponsored reading programs.  Grade level appropriate information and digital literacy skills are also taught and reinforced during scheduled library classes. Ms. Pretz also works with grade levels and individual teachers to schedule book talks and research lessons for various grade level units.

Parent Involvement

To help create a literature-rich environment at home, we encourage all parents to take advantage of an ASIJ family account and checking out up to 25 books for 30 days from any of the ASIJ libraries.  It’s easy to use the online catalog to make selections and place holds.  The library staff is happy to show you how to do this.  Additionally, requests made via email or phone can be made and those books sent home with your child.

Special events, such as authors/illustrators and monthly library literacy events encourage our students to celebrate reading as a community of learners and readers.  These programs are supported by generous contributions from our wonderful PTA and dedicated volunteers.
